Austin Carty is an author, speaker, blogger, television personality, and public school English teacher. A blogger for The Huffington Post and Sojourners, as well as a former cast member on CBS’s Survivor, Carty’s acclaimed new memoir High Points and Lows: Life, Faith, and Figuring It All Out (Penguin) has drawn praise from leading religion writers such as Tony Campolo, Shane Claiborne, and Susan Isaacs. Meanwhile, former religion editor for The Chicago Sun-Times, Cathleen Falsani, says, “Christian colleges would do well by making High Points and Lows required reading for every freshman class.”
An engaging and inspirational speaker, Carty addresses churches, universities, high schools, non-profits, and businesses across the country. Among his speaking credits, he has delivered the keynote address at the National Multiple Sclerosis Convention in Chicago, spoken from the pulpit at Saddleback Church in Orange County, California, and lectured on writing and literature at Ole Miss and at the University of Virginia. Exploring themes of theology, sociology, and pop culture while addressing wide-ranging issues such as faith, compassion, and social justice, Carty’s style is to strip bare his own life and faith, revealing honest accounts of what he has learned along his own journey.
Carty, who holds a BA in English Literature from High Point University, lives in High Point, North Carolina with his wife, April, and his dog, Gator.
